Workforce Investment Act (WIA)

Through the United States Department of Labor, funding is provided for adults, youth, and dislocated workers for employment and training services.

In Michigan, these programs are administered through the statewide Michigan Works! system. Established in 2000, the Workforce Investment Act replaced the Job Training Partnership Act of 1978.

GED Preparation Classes

GED preparation classes are offered at all three Michigan Works! Service Center sites. Teachers assist students in achieving readiness to take the test for receiving the General Educational Diploma (GED) in cases where they have not graduated from high school.

Electricity Utility/Lineworker Information Session

Now and in the future, Electrical -Utility/Lineworkers will be more difficult to find because of the retirement of "baby boomers" and the smaller pool of workers who follow them.

Lansing Community College has developed a Certificate of Achievement to identify potential candidates to enter Electrical -Utility/Lineworker Apprenticeship Programs.

This session is to inform you about the criteria and courses required to be eligible for this extraordinary opportunity.

WHO: Individuals wanting to pursue a career in utility line work

WHAT: Information and Criteria

Consumers Energy representatives will discuss their role, expectations, and criteria for employment with Consumers Energy

Lansing Community College representatives will discuss the Lansing Community College Electrical Utility/Lineworker Certificate program and the definition of department approval and criteria to receive it
Successful completion of the certificate may result in the opportunity to be selected into the Consumers Energy apprenticeship program
Maximum total weight of 350 pounds; including clothing and 50 pounds of tools
Understand and fully abide by all safety instructions, requirements and regulations
Must be able to physically climb poles, carry 50 pounds of tools, and perform duties at required heights
Must be able to obtain a CDL license
Must be drug free throughout the entire program and career
Cannot have a felony conviction
